It's easy to find out if a number you're calling is local or long distance. If you dial a number using 10 digits (area code + phone number) and the call is completed, then it's a local call. However, if you hear a recording letting you know that long distance charges apply or advising you to dial 1 + phone number, then the call is long distance.
