Information & Resources
If you’re in the early stages of immigrating to Canada, you may find these government resources helpful:
"Planning your finances is key to settling in comfortably during your first few months in Canada. Here are some tips to get you started:
Estimate your monthly expenses: Think about costs like rent, insurance (health, car, home), taxes, utilities, and telecommunications.
Look into opening a Canadian bank account from trusted providers in your home country before you arrive in Canada: Some banks offer international accounts, or you can prepare for alternative options like fund transfers, international money orders, or demand drafts.
Consider bringing enough Canadian currency for the initial days: This will help cover you until you can set up a local bank account.
Pro tip: If you’re bringing more than $10,000 in cash or equivalents, don’t forget to declare it to the Canadian Border Services Agency when you arrive."
Create a list of household and personal items you plan to bring with you. Divide the list into 2 sections: one for items that you're bringing right away, and one for items that will arrive later. Make 2 copies of this list.
Be prepared to disclose any funds you plan to bring with you
If you're able to get an international driving license, learn Canadian driving rules and road signs
Plan ahead for where you'll stay when you arrive.
The weather in Canada will probably be quite different from your home country, so it's a good idea to pack clothes suitable for all four seasons. This way, you can also save some money in shopping during your first few months here.
Think about getting travel insurance if your trip involves connections with multiple stops, or if someone in your family has a concerning condition.
In some countries, hospitals may require proof of coverage or upfront payment for treatment.
Travel insurance can also come in handy for things like flight delays, cancellations, or lost luggage.
Just make sure to review the details of what is and isn’t covered so you’re fully prepared.
Be sure that all your following documents are in order before you arrive in Canada:
Passport for each member of the family, which should not be expiring in the next 6 months
Immigrant visa/travel document for each member of your family
Birth certificates
Marriage certificates
Transcripts of all educational achievements
Copies of medical records
Work references
Drivers license, if you have one. If possible, get an international driving license/permit from your home country until you're able to get a Canadian driver’s license
As part of the next stage of your journey in Canada, it's important to prepare for the job market.
Credential Assessment If you want to work in a trade or skill or further upgrade your skills by studying, an agency may help you assess your credentials:
As a foreign skilled worker, your Educational Credential Assessments (ECAs) are required
The Canadian Information Centre for International Credentials is a good starting point
Academic Credentials If you would like to further your education in Canada, you may get your academic credentials assessed by a school or an agency.
Resume and Job Agencies To successfully enter the job market, you might want to:
Participate in workshops provided by trusted agencies and organizations that assist immigrants. This way, you can gain skills in crafting your own resume and cover letter.
